Cruise Luggage: What Actually Fits in a Sedan, SUV, Van or Coach

The most common booking mistake we see is a party of four choosing a sedan because a sedan seats four. On cruise day that party has four large suitcases, four carry-ons and a stroller. Seats are rarely the constraint; luggage is.

These are real working numbers, not marketing maximums. A sedan seats up to two passengers precisely because the third and fourth seat would have nowhere to put their bags.

What counts as a large bag

• Large: a standard checked suitcase up to 50 lb — the 27 to 29 inch case most cruisers travel with.
• Small: a carry-on, backpack, tote or duffel up to 20 lb.
• Awkward items — golf clubs, scooters, wheelchairs, dive gear, wedding dresses in boxes — need mentioning at booking. They usually fit; they need the right vehicle.
• Strollers and car seats count as large bags for space purposes.

Choosing correctly

• Couple, one week at sea: executive sedan. Two large and two small is exactly a week of cruise packing.
• Family of four: luxury SUV, not a sedan. Four large and two small, with room for a stroller.
• Five to six adults: SUV only if the group packs light; otherwise the 10-passenger van, which carries eight large and eight small.
• Seven to fourteen: the 14-passenger van or Sprinter. Twelve large and six small.
• Fifteen to nineteen: the 19-passenger Sprinter with luggage trailer — the only configuration that carries a large and a small bag for every seat.

Car seats and special items

• Child car seats: $25 per seat, requested at booking. Florida requires them for children under six.
• Wheelchairs and mobility scooters: tell us the type and folded dimensions; SUVs and vans handle most, and coaches handle all.
• Meet & Greet ($40, sedan and SUV): worth it when your party has more bags than hands — the chauffeur meets you inside and helps from baggage claim.
